My thoughts on the show last night, The Billy Corgan..errr Mumford & Sons, were a bit mixed. I was excited on the way to the show, listening to their classic discography and getting goosebumps, but what I witnessed was a bored band delivering a phoned-in performance.
I've witnessed them at the peak of their career, full of energy and rocking the stage.
It felt as if this tour was solely about Billy Corgan reaffirming his relevance. The opening solo song with only self-portraits on the big screen was a rather somber moment.
Billy's eccentricity has been escalating over the years, but this performance took it to another level.
Had they just come out and performed with passion, it would have been immensely better. Instead, they focused on creating a theatrical experience with Billy as the central figure, even incorporating unnecessary costume changes.
While there were standout moments with songs like Soma and Zero, the overall setlist lacked cohesion and energy, appearing disjointed.
The lack of flow in the show made it challenging to stay engaged, prompting me to leave early to avoid the crowd.
I've decided that reunion and arena shows are not for me. I'd rather cherish my heroes as they are and not risk tarnishing their image by attending lackluster performances.
